Motoring fines set to increase fourfold.

The Government has said that magistrates courts will soon be able to issue maximum fines fourfold of what current maximum rates are. Such fines include motoring fines which are increasing to £10,000 for motorway speeders.

The proposed increases to the maximum fines are as follows;

Level 1 (including unauthorised cycle racing on public ways): from £200 to £800

Level 2 (including driving a motor cycle without a protective helmet): from £500 to £2,000.

Level 3 (including sale of alcohol to a drunken person or being drunk and disorderly in public): from £1,000 to £4,000.

Level 4 (including speeding on the motorway): from £2,500 to £10,000.

    Magistrates also will have the power to set unlimited fines for more serious motoring offences such as careless driving or driving without insurance.
