Landmark Case 2001 & 2005 European Court of Human Rights

(R vs Shannon [2001] 1 WLR 51 & Shannon vs UK [2005]).
This was a notorious case of a 'Fake Sheikh Sting' by the now defunct News of the World, involving the supply of drugs. The issue was entrapment; whether the Snaresbrook Crown Court trial was adversely affected and unfair. Should the evidence have been admitted from the agent provocateur? This was an application under s78 of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984.

Andrew Parker and the team defended John Shannon (aka Alford), a television actor. We dealt with the police investigation and challenged the decision to include evidence all the way to the ECHR in Strasbourg. However, ultimately the final arbiter did not agree with our position. The challenge of taking a case all the way to the ECHR was fascinating.
